Pioneering spirit and the aspiration to constantly tread new paths and pursue them consistently to the end characterise Beluga Shipping GmbH. This is demonstrated in particular by Beluga’s great commitment to research and development. The Bremen project and heavy-lift cargo shipping company has set its sights on opening the door to progress and actively putting the concepts of viability and sustainability into practice. To strengthen and expand this sustainable course, Beluga Shipping has set up a separate Research & Innovation Department. According to the Association of German Shipowners, such commitment is unique nationwide. Here you will learn more about selected research projects in which Beluga is involved and about current innovations on which the company is working.

Saving fuel, reducing emissions and thus making an active contribution to climate protection – this is the focus of several projects in the Research & Innovation Department. We are on the lookout for new propulsion systems or fuels that are more efficient and protect the environment. More efficient procedures and a holistic maritime information and communication system on board the vessels are also major research topics in the department.

The towing kite propulsion system has successfully completed its premiere in commercial operation on the high seas. The MV “Beluga SkySails“, a new carrier equipped with towing kite technology that supports the main engine, sailed on its maiden voyage from Bremen to Guanta (Venezuela), Davant (USA), Mo-I-Rana and Holla (Norway) in January/February 2008. What does a ship cost – from design to decommissioning? How much in operating resources, spare parts and service is required in a vessel’s lifecycle? And how can their costs be reduced? The MarLife project wants to provide answers to these questions. Opens internal link in current windowMore

Innovative coatings for ship surfaces can diminish flow resistance and thus reduce fuel consumption – this is important not only for reasons of cost savings, but is also valuable from an ecological point of view. The HAI-TECH research project focuses on the development of an innovative coating for the hull. It imitates the structure of sharkskin and thus makes use of bionics. Another model is aviation – there hasn’t been any paperwork in the cockpit or in the cabin for a long time now. Now shipping is following suit: to increase ship and occupational safety on board, Beluga Fleet Management is developing an information and communication system for the “paperless” ship.
