MarLife - Maritime LCM - Integrated Life Cycle Management for the Maritime Sector
What does a ship cost – from design to decommissioning? How much in operating resources, spare parts and service is required in a vessel’s lifecycle? And how can their costs be reduced? The MarLife project wants to provide answers to these questions since modern management can help to make ship operation considerably more efficient and environmentally friendly. Operation routes and maintenance cycles of the carriers are centrally managed so that the respective characteristics of the vessels optimally match the order. Superfluous unscheduled voyages, such as to repair shipyards, can be avoided in this way.
The paramount goal of the MarLife project is to set up integrated Life Cycle Management (LCM) for the maritime sector – after all, the significance of LCM in merchant shipping is growing continuously. On the one hand, legal regulations and, on the other hand, mounting demands on the part of shipowners with respect to the effectiveness and efficiency in operation, maintenance and repair of their vessels are the basis for this development. MarLife drafts specific solutions for shipping companies as the core users of LCM systems. The latter are designed to generate decisive advantages for shipping companies in terms of management of their fleet and significantly increase their competitiveness on global markets.
Other goals defined by the research project include:
• reducing the total costs of a ship incurred during its lifecycle
• designing a holistic lifecycle management control system for the maritime sector
• implementing, testing and validating (further) developed systems
