Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra –
The Philharmonic for Bremen

Whether opera or philharmonic concert, musical or chamber music, charity concert or developing young musical talent – through its diverse commitment to the arts the Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra is a pillar of support for musical life in the region.

As an orchestra with one of the longest traditions in the world based on its nearly 200-year history, the Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra can be experienced practically on a daily basis during the season. By virtue of around 175 opera performances at Theater Bremen and 24 philharmonic concerts at Bremen’s “Die Glocke” concert hall, over 30 special, charity and chamber concerts and numerous projects for developing young musical talent, the Philharmonic has a significant influence on musical life in northwest Germany.

Beluga Shipping GmbH as well as the Gallery and Artist House Spiekeroog support the successful work of the Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra. The artistic reputation of the orchestra under the direction of its General Music Director Markus Poschner and the great popularity among the public and specialist publications are impressive evidence of the artistic quality of the Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra. In June 2009, for example, it performed on the water stage at Bremen’s Waterfront as well as on the open air theater in the harbor of Spiekeroog. Supported by “Galerie- und Künstlerhaus Spiekeroog” and supplemented by soloists from Theater Bremen and international stars, the orchestra played Giuseppe Verdi's “Aida” against an impressive harbour backdrop in both special open-air concerts.

Developing young musical talent is a special concern of the Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra. At diverse events in and outside the school they excite over 10,000 children and young people in Bremen and the metropolitan region in northwest Germany every year. The “Bremen Music Workshop” of the Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra, through which it has been possible to develop and implement a unique concept in Germany for broad-based musical education, is a milestone. The “Bremen Music Workshop” received distinction from the initiative “Germany – Land of Ideas” and Deutsche Bank and has been designated a “Landmark in the land of ideas”. Since 2009, Beluga Shipping GmbH supports the “Bremen Music Workshop” by funding two primary schools in Bremen. Thus, all the pupils get the chance to take part in the music programme.

As impressively demonstrated by its broad spectrum of activities, the Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra is more than “just” an orchestra. It constitutes a significant element in Bremen’s social foundation. It is committed to developing young people as well as supporting social and charitable goals. In 2008, for instance, the Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra took part in the crossover charity concerts Öffnet einen externen Link in einem neuen FensterHOME meets Classic. The total proceeds from these concerts were used for the benefit of the child relief projectÖffnet einen externen Link in einem neuen FensterBeluga School for Life in Thailand.
