Bremer Fonds

“Bremer Fonds e.V.” (Bremen Fund) was created by Niels Stolberg, CEO of Beluga Shipping GmbH, endowed with start-up capital and tailored to specific projects. The patron is Bremen’s mayor, Jens Böhrnsen. Children and young people from socially weak city districts are supported by the Bremen Fund.

The Bremen Fund, a non-profit-making organisation, is an initiative of Bremen companies, personalities from politics and industry as well as committed citizens, all of whom are members. It is aimed at supporting the education and training of children and young persons from socially disadvantaged city districts in the federal state of Bremen as well as providing humanitarian and material aid to needy children and young people.

The “Youth Night” at the Bremen Town Hall in mid-November 2007 was the conceptual birth of the Bremen Fund. Pupils presented a study on the “division of the city” which demonstrated that the chances of children and young people getting a good school education and a traineeship are significantly worse in districts with higher child poverty than in districts with lower child poverty. It shows that child poverty is concentrated in districts with a pronounced migration background.

This is where the work of the non-profit-making organisation comes in. The Bremen Fund is endowed with initial capital of around 500,000 euros, supplied half and half by the organisation and the foundation respectively, and supplemented by donations and membership fees of the organisation. With these funds at its disposal the Bremen Fund is thus able to furnish assistance precisely where government support and aid programmes for young people from Bremen and Bremerhaven have not had an effect as yet, or at least not to an adequate degree. In addition to projects for developing junior staff, imparting values, strengthening the personality and improving prospects on the training and labour market, the fields of activity of the Bremen Fund focus on counteracting violence and crime, supporting intercultural and integrative projects as well as helping out in cases of poverty, financial need and also individual “strokes of fate”.
